LEWIS PELL FOR CONGRESS IN NEW JERSEY'S NINTH DISTRICT

Life and Career

Lewis Pell is a graduate of Yale University and an ordained minister of the United Church of Christ.  The Reverend Mr. Pell has worked all his adult life with youth—as a teacher, counselor and now as a pastoral minister to homeless and runaway kids at Covenant House in New York City.  A registered Independent, he has always been wary of mainstream politics, and envisioned a return to grass-roots empowerment of the people at the community level.  He believes that if given the means, we the people have all the go-power and intelligence to create a truly just and non-violent society.

Primary Social-Political Concerns

bullet

Get government out of the hands of the corporate-America controlled "DemReps" that continue to promise so much and deliver so little.  All political campaigns financed out of the tax base (i.e., major campaign reform).  We need a return to government of the people, by the people, for the people.

bullet

Demilitarize our society: find and implement non-violent ways to resolve differences on all levels (including a federal Department of Peace), and begin to transform the behemoth military-industrial budget into a budget for funding humanitarian causes.

bullet

Reform and improve our educational system with quality affordable education available for all.

bullet

Radically reform our healthcare system to provide universal affordable single payer healthcare for all.  It is a blot on our nation that we are the only western democratic society to have entered this millennium with an antiquated, grossly inefficient and inhumane for-profit healthcare system still in place.

bullet

Make environmental and ecological sustainability one of the highest priorities; as in all these issues, face and deal with the wanton destructiveness of corporate power and its amoral hyper-greed.

bullet

Enfranchise the marginalized—the so-called minorities, women, youth, etc.

bullet

Radically reform of our grossly inhumane and unfair penal system; focus on rehabilitation over incarceration, no privatization, reform the court system, abolish the death penalty.
