URGENT NEED!!!!

A group here in central NJ (based in Basking Ridge) has single-handedly adopted Houma, Louisiana--a town completely ignored by the "official" relief organizations--and has been sending truckloads of supplies beginning on Sunday.  Here's a description of the situation:

THERE IS NO RED CROSS< NO SALVATION ARMY, NO GOV ASSISTANCE OF ANY TYPE. 10K displaced from New Orleans, and their town got hit as well.  working in a civic center.

Conditions now are run by Chamber of Commerce in town and by churches.  Everything is calm, in part because everyone here realizes they are in the same boat and the church leaders have been very hands on.

Need this help badly!  We are it.

...need to get volunteers there like EMT, Doctors, Cooks, Clean up crews, social workers and the like.

If you can assist, it would mean the world to this community that has NO assistance other than us!!
We need a bus.  We need volunteers.  If you've been twitching for a way to actively help, here's the opportunity!

Contact me right away if you know of an organization or corporation that has a bus and might be willing to volunteer it for this use!!!!  Contact me right away if you want to be part of the volunteer crew.  Please let me know what skills you bring to the mix.

Thank you in advance for what I know will be generous offers!

Even the most unaware have begun to understand that the brunt of the Katrina disaster has been borne by the most vulnerable--the poor, people of color, the disabled, the very young and the very old.  Our mission is to provide long-term support to those who have no other recourse--those who will be forgotten when the news cameras turn away to the next story.

We are coordinating with local community organizers and local organizations that serve the devastated communities on an ongoing basis.  Right now communication is difficult--phone lines that worked through the week of hurricane and flooding seem to have been cut off--but we will re-establish those contacts as soon as possible and will coordinate offers of housing, supplies, support, labor and skills and money as needs are identified by the affected communities.

At this point, we are gathering contact information for folks who have something to share--we will contact you as needs are identified and coordinate donations and volunteers with identified needs.

Please click on the "Donate" link and tell us who you are and what you have to offer.

If you are organizing collection or transportation of supplies, please click on our "Organizer" link and tell us what you are doing and where folks can find you.

If you are in the disaster area or in areas to which refugees are being transported and are coordinating local relief, click on the "Local Need" link and tell us what you need and where you need it.

We will also be posting relief activities of other community organizations who work with local communities in the affected areas.
